Your ball? Oh, that old thing? Well, hmmm. The last time I used it, I left it in the bathtub.

The bathtub? Why on earth would you put it in the bathtub? It wasn't in the bathtub this morning! It's not in the bathtub now!

It was a joke, Sirius. I haven't seen the thing. I swear, if you can't take care of your own property...

But, but... it's the Best Ball! It's supposed to be over here by the fire in the sitting room with the Tugging Rope and the Old Smelly Jumper --

THEY'RE GONE TOO! MOONY! WE'VE BEEN ROBBED!

Great Scott! I shall ring up the Aurors immediately! Why, I'm sure it's a new generation of Death Eaters - or even worse, a wild pack of Animagi dogs!!!

*eyeroll*

Your jumper is out in the backyard hanging up to dry. Don't worry, I didn't scourgify it too badly, it still smells like my feet.

Oh, very funny indeed. We'll set you up as a busker outside the Broomsticks and you can pass the hat.

Why did you have to scourgify the jumper? It smelled PERFECT just the way it was!

And WHERE'S MY BALL?

I had to scourgify it to keep the doxies at bay, Sirius. If you haven't noticed, I've been doing a spot of spring cleaning today.

And I haven't the slightest clue where Best Ball might have gone off to. Considering the state it was in when I last saw it, it might have sprung legs and joined Hagrid's menagerie.

Spring cleaning? Is that what you call it? You've been going mental with the mops and the rags. Isn't that what we have an elf for?

Moony, do not mock the Best Ball! It's taken me YEARS to get that ball into perfect chewing shape. You wouldn't like it if I mocked your Lucky Quill, would you?

I--

No, you're right. I shouldn't say a word about the Best Ball.

You've every right to...

No, never mind. Did you look upstairs? I could go and check under the bed. Or perhaps in Wort's room? Maybe I ought to go out to the shed and see if it's out there.

*sigh* No, don't go out, mate. It's getting late and you're already wearing yourself out. Why don't you let the elf take care of ... whatever it is you're trying to do? Sit down and let me put the kettle on. I'll find my ball in the morning.

Sit? Yes, alright. That sounds nice.

*fidgeting*

I'll just go upstairs and re-fold the towels while we wait for the kettle. Won't be but a few minutes.

No?

Re-fold...? Have they suddenly decided to throw off all towel self-discipline and break out in a riot of wrinkles?

I don't think so. In fact, since all my toys seem to have fled in fear of your dustcloth, I suppose I'll have to play with you instead. Let's see how far you get from that chair with 14 stone of dog in your lap! HA!

*WOOF!*

Hah! Padfoot you!! On the... on-

Okay, you win. *snuggles* It's going to be a bad one this week. You'll stay with me, won't you?

Yes, yes, Snuffles, I understand. You're not going to let me up again, are you?

And you know, I am awfully glad of that.

So close to the Solstice. And the moon... it's supposed to be larger than usual, too. I can feel it, you know? Like my skin is crawling, and I can't settle myself down.

...

Oh, hell, Moony, I'm sorry. Let me get off your lap. I'm far too heavy.

But NO, you are not getting up. You need your rest. And you needn't worry about the moon, love. I'll be there with you every single moment. Not an army of Dementors could drive me away, and we have the most comfortable werewolf-friendly cellar in Britain --

oh bloody hell, THAT's where my toys went! I took them all downstairs in case we wanted them this week!

*chuckle*

Sirius, God I love you.

Go on, then. Get your toys, make the tea, and I'll wait for you right here. If you like, you can lay in my lap while I read to you.

Where's Wort? Perhaps we can all read something together?

I only got her to sleep less than an hour ago. She's been just as jumpy as you are all day. Our cublet's growing up, mate. Won't be long before ...

well, I'll be there for her too. I'll be there for both of you, and I always will, and that's the end of it.

There's the kettle. SIT. STAY! HA!

Yes, I'll stay. Sit.

*calling out to the other room* Can I get up to go and fetch my book? I think it's on the table just over there!

No, you may not. I know you, mate -- you'll stand up to get it and next minute you'll start mopping the floor.

Accio book! Here.

I will not!

Hurry back though, Sirius, so we can read our bedtime story and then go find some other toys you have hidden.
